Today marks the end of en era.
For the past 3 1/2 years, my home has been without internet service. This was initially a conscious decision, an effort to save money and time by not wasting either. For the past several years, using the internet meant packing up my laptop and heading to Staufs, Starbucks, or another wifi spot. This took a substantial amount of time, and editing was never practical in a crowded coffee shop, so I only did this when I needed to upload photos to the proofs site, or put in an order. For a while, I also made do by using my smartphone as a hotspot, but this didn't last long since uploading huge files eats data like you wouldn't believe.
In the past few months, kiwiphoto has grown to a point that it is no longer practical or cost effective to keep using coffee shop WiFi. Six or more $4 lattes each month are costing me more than basic internet, (not to mention time wasted in waiting for shared WiFi to load things) so it was time to make a change.
How exciting it is to be in a place where my business is growing enough that a change is warranted. It seems like it's been slow going getting to this point, but things are beginning to snowball. My hope is that this investment in internet service brings loads of productivity and better service to my clients, rather than unending wasted hours of watching movies online.
Slated next for upgrade is my ancient computer. It has faithfully been serving me since my sophomore year of college, and as a laptop, it was never built for editing photos. It's been doing it's best, but it hasn't aged gracefully. It's been through a lot of abuse on my part, and so I can only be thankful that it has lasted as long as it has. I know it's time to go the way of a desktop, and now that my home has internet, there's really no reason not to. So, if I may open a debate amongst my fellow photographers, designers, and creatives everywhere, Mac or PC? I'd love to gain input from those that I trust. But please, do me a favor and give me solid, measurable reasons. None of that "My mac is so easy to use" or "my PC was way cheaper than a mac" or "I really like my computer, you should get one too" nonsense. I know I'm about to drop at least a grand on a computer, and I need something solidly built that can handle Adobe Creative Cloud with ease. So, if you have insight I'm not keen to, please share in the comments below.
